It's rare to get an opportunity to save someones life, but here it is.
Do not go to an art school, go to a University if you want to become a professional artist. Art schools are private institutions that are accredited only to themselves, monitored only by themselves and usually have no regard for business side of the art world [which is very important if you plan on a career, all the talent in the universe will not get you there alone].
Art schools are usually overpriced and overrated....they rate themselves and create their own statistics, yes,.. they can do that ..being private and all.
best thing to do is check out some of your favorite artists that work with the same stuff you do..and see what university they went to. some schools are better known for handling certain types of artists and artforms.

I would concur with the last statement, but I would like to emphsize some other points that were not touched upon. A hard pill for most people to swallow about private art schools is the cost of tuition and the cost of living associated with living in a large metropolitain area in which most art schools reside. Easily one could spend upwards of $40,000 a year on tuition and living expenses. Even with loans, and scholarships private art schools are not a cheap endeavor, especially for a incoming freshmen who has not really honed an idea of what they want to do in art school. Furthermore, even if that aforementioned freshman has an idea of what they want to do, chances are like most freshman they will change their major within the first year or two, having taken expensive classes that perhaps were not required for their degree.
Additionally as the last person mentioned with a lot of art schools there is a lack of applied discipline and an emphasis on art theory. Another shortcoming is that private art schools don't provide so much of a well rounded education oustide the arts which in my experience is just as important in developing your artisitic sensibilities as any art class. However, if you aren't so strong outside of the field of art: history, math, English etc...well it is a easy way out, but in the long run you will be cheating yourself.
I wouldn't go so far as to completely discredit private art schools. If you are going after your masters or doctorate, it is often a good choice. On the other hand for your undergraduate, stick to a good University. Personally I would take a look into San Jose State University California, Long Beach State, or Cal Poly for your undergraduate. Outside of private art schools, I do believe San Jose State has the largest public art department west of the Missippi.
