The Official position of the Chinese govenrment, as was that of the Former Soviet Union is that the people SHOULD be athiests as any sort of religious belief detracts and distracts from the goals and aims of the Party. However, while there are a significant number of people in China that are athiests, the majoprity of chinese citizens follow some variety of religious doctrine. The main religious belief, that being the one followed by the most people, is Budhism. While technically Buddhism is more of a philosophical doctrrine than a religious one, it has enough traits of a religious belief to be considered as one. The ame applies to the next most widespread belief system, Taoism. After that there are a number of people that follow an acknowledged philosophical system known as Cunfucianism. There are also a number of people that practice a form of ancestor worship that is practiced in some varient throughout Asia and has elements in common with Japanese Shinto and Native American Shamanism.

Taoism is the oldest in China.
Buddhism made great gains standing along side Taoism for centuries.
Athiesm is the "official" position of the People's Republic of China.
However, Chrisitanity began to make inroads when William Wallace went there in the 1800's, and others followed. Today there are unofficial estimates that the underground church of the PRC is as large as 1/3 of their population, but 300,000,000 seems an optimistic estimate.

Religion is illegal in china. They used to crack down on this very harshly (basically executing most religious leaders). Today, it's rather haphazard. Although cruel and harsh, they only go after people sporadically.
