Our chihuahua was very lightly hit by a car. It frightened her way mroe than injured. In fact, she just limped for a bit.

Now however, she will NOT pee in the yard as she would before, ahd scoots back to the front door as soon as I carry her outside. So, there have been 'accidents' and dog doo on the carpet. No one has caught her in the act to scold her.

Any ideas about how to remove her fear of the outdoors, and how to retrain her to do her stuff OUTside, not in the house.

You need to start from the beginning like it was a new puppy. When you take your dog outside offer a lot of encouragement. Try to take her to a quiet place to do her business. Crate train her.. Get a crate not much bigger than the dog and keep the dog in the crate when you are sleeping, not home or unable to watch her. Take the dog outside to do her business immediately when you take her out of the crate. Take the dog outside to do her business immediately after eating or playing. When you have the dog out of the crate and are watching her look for signs that she is about to go (sniffing, circling) and take him outside. When she goes outside praise her. If she has an accident in the house and you witness it in a stern firm voice tell her "no potty outside" as you are taking her outside. If she has an accident an you do not witness it unfortunately there is nothing that you can do about it. Do not yell at the dog or hit her and do not rub her nose in her mess. Make sure you are consistent and persistent with the training. Always praise a lot when she goes outside. Good luck.

Take her out at a different time, did you have her checked for an injury, carry her out then sit by her holding her leash close to you. Talk to her about her fear of being outside again. Dogs are very smart, be patient with her, how would you act if you got hit by a car? She may never get over her fear! Try taking her in the back yard away from cars!

Did you actually have her checked by a vet after the accident? Try going outside with her instead of having her go alone. Do you have a part of the yard that is not near cars? Animals can be traumitized just as humans can. Kindness and understanding at this stage is essential. do you have a dog-training facility in your area? If so, zi suggest talking with a trainer. Explain the problem and see what answers they might come up with.

We have a very skittish Chihuahua who becomes frightened outside and will not urinate. We have had success by making sure he's in a fenced-in area as it made him feel safe. (This may not be feasible for you.) A harness/leash might work or maybe even just staying close to her while giving her soothing praise.

If not, you could always try litterbox training her, which is quite simple. http://www.kturby.com/litter/litter.htm

Your dog needs to do two things.
One: Learn to associate positive things with being outdoors and
Two: Not to go to the bathroom in the house.

You need to start by not letting accidents happen. You will probably need to crate your dog when noone is there to watch. You cannot let accidents continue.
You then need to take your dog immediately outside when you let him/her out of the crate.
Stay with him/her. Take his/her favorite toy or play a game that he/she enjoys.
Praise him/her when he/she does go to the bathroom outside.
Clean your carpet so there is no smell residue to attract him/her.
