Your best and least expensive option is to buy a Pinnacle AV/DV kit. It comes with a board for both analogue (VHS/8mm) and digital video (Firewire) connections. It also comes with the Studio video editor.

The cheaper way is getting a TV Tuner board. They have RCA jacks that connects easily to your VHS player. Additionally, you get TV reception on your PC.
