I would never go live in another country where I didnt know the language, and I sure as hell would not be so arrogant as to think I could make it on speaking english, and basically telling everyone around me that they need to learn my language instead of me learning theirs. I would be considered totally rude! Then on top of that what would happen if I protested and started demanding stuff, and calling everyone a racist who didnt support me in my effort to disrespect their culture and refuse to learn their language? Id probably get run down by an angry mob!!

Maybe they don't have time to learn one of the most difficult languages on the planet. Have you ever really studied the phonetic structure of English? Do you know how many exceptions there are to every rule? English isn't just something you sprinkle on your pancakes in the morning. Learning a language is a difficult process that takes children 5-7 years when they still have complete use of the language part of the brain. By age 13, or during puberty that part of our brains becomes less receptive to learinging a new language because most 13 year olds have mastered any language they will need to survive.

Well, the Russian and Korean immigrants in our area, and the Japanese and Chinese, for that matter, all seem to learn it.

I think they have imported so many Spanish speakers they feel they shouldn't need to learn our language. However, when 50% of those native Spanish speakers are reportedly here illegally, that seems a bit presumptuous.

How many languages do you speak? I speak English (native) and Spanish from gradeschool through college. Sure, I learned Spanish because I found it interesting, not out of need, but you gain an appreciation for how hard it is to be fluent and be confident when you try to pick up another language yourself.
