We have a black lab who is 6 months old. For the past month or so, he has been itching like crazy, smell coming from his ears and has really bad dandruff. We took him to the vet thinking that he had earmits again. He ended up having an infection in his ears (gave him antibiotics and ear medicine) and said that he had a food allergy and put him on a special vet diet. He is taking Eukanuba something with fish and potato. Well, the dandruff isn't going away and when I was petting him today, something bit me (I have a little bite on my hand that itches). He doesn't have fleas. Any suggestions. Do you think the vet is right? How would she know that he had a food allergy? And shouldn't it be helping by now? My husband was in there with my dog...so I dont know ALL The info...but he is still itching like hell. Its been a week now. Thanks

Food isn't the only Allergy posible. Dogs can be allergic to things out doors. They can also be allergic to shampoos.

(They could be allergic to Fish or Potatos, too).

Fleas are not the only thing that can bite a dog.

You could try changeing their food again (but food allergies are more likely to cause bloating and redness,.. things like that so it might not be food allergies).
You could try giving them a flea dip.
You could try giving them a bath with Hypoallergenic Dog Shampoo/Whatever
You could try takeing them to another vet.
You could try observeing outside for gnats and junk and what the dog plays in.
You could bath the dog then change where it goes to the bathroom for a while to see if things change.

You could try those,.. or a combo. Or you could just ignore the dander.

I would try a combo of changeing where the dog goes outside and giving the dog some sort of bath to see if that changes anything. Your dog might be haveing increased dander from not enough water and not enough moisterazation (I can't spell).

For dry skin the best bet is an oatmeal shampoo and putting vegetable oil on its food. But if they think its an allergy AND SOMETIHNG BIT YOU?? weird!!! Go get that checked out by someone else before trying to fix it yourself.

Take your dog to another vet. A second opinion always helps. If something bit you then something is also biting him. Also, what shampoo and conditioner do you use. I had to start using a conditioner with my dog.

My rottweiler puppy had dandruff and the vet gave me some Fatty Acid to put in his food. The one she gave me is called 3V caps Liquid. He doesn't have dandruff anymore.

Go to another vet and get a second opinion. If it's the same, I don't know.
