In short, Yes, you must install Itunes to be able to export music to the Ipod.

The reason for this is how the Ipod's are set up. First off, Ipods can not read mp3 format, and only will accept m4a file format (this is a compression type that apple uses). In addition you can not treat your Ipod as an external drive to export your files to, The only way to get the Ipod to use the files you put onto it is if you use the Itunes software.

Both. You can use the music that you downloaded using limewire but, you have to import it into itunes in order to be able to put it onto your ipod.
