My opinion? They think that since they create them, they should do everything they tell them to do. When I have children, I will let them do anything they want but I will tell them the possible consequences of their actions.

I think being over protective is just the way some parents show they care. Children have to learn how to become independent. All you can do is guide them and hope for the best.

Parents need to protect their children because there are a lot of awful people out there in this world. However, I do believe that you need to give your children increased freedom as they age so that they can become independent and learn life's lessons so that they are prepared to protect their future children.

Sometimes children who feel too overprotected should be happy that they have a parent that cares so much about them.

Those parents that are over protective of their children do them a disservice. "Burned hands teach best...after that, advice about fire goes to the heart". I'm not suggesting that one actually burn a child's hand or let the child burn themselves, but pain can be a very effective attention-getter. The trick is to make sure that the damage isn't too severe or too costly. I draw the lines at drawing blood, breaking bones (or other's property), or burning flesh (or other's property).

I think I over protect my daughter at least family tell me so. I only do it because I want to take care of her and not let anything happen to her even thou its impossible for that to happen. But besides that I also teach her that they will be consequences for her bad decisions. So as long as you are OK and don't exaggerate.

They are their children.

And just like any other parent they are trying to be the best they can be for their kids. They also probably want to make sure their kids are the best they can be. It's just a different parenting style.

However, most of these mom's only have one kid. Once the second one comes along most of that stuff goes out the winow!

I am a child of overprotective parents and i can assure you it will only make them rebel more. they will start to wonder why it is that you are trying to stop them from doing what ever it is they want to do. They will get curious and do it against you will. I'm not saying to let them to whatever but be reasonable.
