Hi--I read the recipe & in this case, I'd say yes. The zest is for the added flavour, & the juice--well--it's needed for juice! (Liquid.)
Zest to "kick it up a notch." I'd use both.
Edit: Lots of good answers. One tip--the zest won't be "bitter" unless you grate it to the WHITE under the skin/peel. THAT part is bitter! I have a wonderful hydroplane for zesting because I use it a lot. Both lemons & limes. Good luck!

If it calls for lemon zest in addition to the juice the zest is necessary to impart the true taste of lemon. The juice mostly provides the tartness rather than the lemon flavor that is desired.

Yes, the grated outer peel is the zest of the lemon and zest actually what gives the recipe the "lemon" flavor; the juice gives the tartness.
The zest contains the lemon skin's oil and flavoring

oh yes----by all means do add the lemon zest. the oils that come from the lemon peeling adds flavor that you can't get from the bottle of lemon juice. soooooo-if the recipe calls for lemon jiuce as well as lemon zest, go to the store and buy a lemon. you'll
be glad you did and will certainly taste the difference.

You can leave it out. However, your recipe won't have as strong a lemon flavor without it. Also, I note that lemon is the only flavoring in this recipe and it calls for a LOT of zest. I don't recommend omitting it in this particular resipe. I think you will be disappointed if you do.

It is not necessary but it does give a deeper lemon flavor from the zest. The lemon oils in the zest help to enhance the lemon flavor in any recipe you add it to.

Yes. The flavor is more concentrated in zest than juice. You might be able to get by with extract, but I'd go with the zest.

i would say yes, the zest offers a distinct flavor that the juice doesnt,,, i have been watching the cooking channel lately, and its amazing, atleast to me, how much they use it,,,,,,i guess the only way to really know, is to make the recipe both ways, with and without

wouldnt be NECESSARY but zest gives a much stronger flavor than lemon juice...i would use the zest if you can...just need a lemon, and grate the peel of the lemon to create "zest."
