i've been doing research on small dogs because i want one. I read that toy fox terriors are very trainable. and they are very small. Jack russels are easy to train to...but they arent as small as the toyfox.

Do you want a purebred or a mix? Jack Russells are very trainable and very sociable. They are about 15 pounds, so not a really small dog, but hardly large. A mix with jack russell would also be good. I have a jack russell minature dauschound mix who is a very smart and sociable dog. If you are training, definately a puppy, and the people who recommend the shelties or border collies are right, they are very easily trained and good dogs...

Great effort. Try Finding a small cattle or sheep herding runt of the litter. a kelpie (?) australian is true genius in the herd group. I have loved them for a long time.Though small they are brave and single minded. They mature to full time workers at about three years but even at eight months they show potential for herding with the big dogs. They will train YOU to listen to the Music of whelps/whines and head bobs. RESPECT the inner wolf and respond with a warm "FISTy CUDDLE" rub your hand around the front quarters like they do to each other/especially with cat-like maneuvers under the chin/chest. never PET on the head except to hold a hand beside you to be affirmed by your FRIEND. Remember You Work for the dog , get them to the JOB provide material to work with and Clean up the trash when the show is over. Kelpie are Easy keepers, moderate eaters, and fast learners of both good habits and bad, The instincts for play are strong and play to them is working herd, guilding young , catching what ever you throw to be retrieved ,,.. love them enough to cry at their victory and laugh at defeats..

i would suggest and black lab becuase thoughs are pretty easy to train most of the time, but before you get just any old dog make sure you look at its back round and history,
if its parents had bad tempuments or were wild and untamly then i would suggest going with another dog.
it pretty much all depends on the history of the dog
other breeds i suggest would be:
Papillion, Cocker Spanial, possibly a golden retriver, umm... schitzu, Beagle, a collie... there are plenty of others you could look up on google and yahoo search!
just type in dog breeds and training facts see what you come up with!

Bichon Frise! It's got an athletic build(that you can see when it's shaved) and is very lovable, sociable, friendly, obedient, easy to train, goes well with other animal, a friend for life, and is even small with powder puff fur that's really soft and hypo allergenic.

Pomeranians are both small and intelligent. I have a black pom and he is the best pet I have ever owned. They are pretty much "one owner" dogs... so get one as a pup. Once they bond with someone, their loyality is with that person forever. They are verygood with children, also (I have 2 kids).Standared pomeranians weigh about 8-10 lbs and the "tinies" weigh from a pound to 1 1/2 lbs. Black poms are fairly rare (in regards to color) but the "party" colored dogs are the rarest. Pomeranians are popular in dog shows.

Shelties are very easily trained, the males are sociable if socialized young, and are among the very best at agility.
