No to both questions. Diet drinks are sweetened artificially, not with sugar.

Diet drinks almost never have any sugar in them. They have sugar substitutes, which are synthetic (man made) in nature and are actually far worse for your health than the sugar in regular drinks. The usual suspects are Asparteme and Sucralose and Splenda. Plenty of studies confirm that the first two have negative side affects - sometimes significant in nature. As for Splenda, no long term studies have been done as it's a new product. It claims to be better for you because it's "made with real sugar".

Having spoken to a chemist, what the makers have done is "flip" a sugar molecule so that it's unrecognizable to the body and thus does not get digested. No digestion, no calories added to your waistline. Nutritionally, it's of no value to the body whatsoever. I do my level best to avoid sodas in general, but especially diet drinks. Think of them as liquid poison, because in the long run, that's about what they amount to. Do some research and you'll come to know what I mean.

both diet gold/caffeine free and the diet coke do not contain sugar. They contain artificial sweetener (I believe they use aspartame). Some producers are switching to splenda now, but I think Coca-cola still uses aspartame.

theres sugar substitute instead, which is worse than sugar because at least sugar is not processed many times but sugar substitute is an artificial sweetener. Its the same for all the sugar-free mints like eclipse and airwaves. I've heard sugar substitue can cause cancer

Diet sodas (with or without caffeine) do not contain sugar. To make a sweet drink without sugar, they add a replacement such as aspertame or sucralose (Splenda) which add sweetness without adding calories like sugar (or high-fructose corn syrup) would.
