Could it be that the 3 doctors are telling you that your son either now has or in the past had rheumatic fever, but the cardiologist is saying there is no heart damage from it? It is quite possible to have rheumatic fever, but have no heart damage. The main point here is, if he has no heart damage, he will be fine. Even pts. with some damage usually life a full life with few problems. Talk to the docs again and be sure they explain things very clearly.

I think it is called Rheumatic Fever. It is a VERY dangerous disease. I, personally, know two people that had Rheumatic Fever when they were around 7 years old. One is 70 and have had heart valves replaced and the other is 66 years old and is somewhat luckier with no valves replaced.

It affects the valves of the heart and it affect lasts a lifetime.

Get a second opinion!!!! It CAN be checked for!!
Good luck. Pops

Rheumatic fever is diagnosed in the presence of certain criteria. They are modified Jones criteria. If there is one major criterion with 2 minor or 2 major criteria, along with evidence of recent streptococcal infection, the child will be diagnosed as rheumatic fever. However, the criteria are not fool proof. Rarely they may be positive with rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions. Your son was probably referred to a cardiologist for work up for rheumatic carditis, or heart involvement. He probably means that the work up for rheumatic carditis was negative. It is safer to treat the condition as rheumatic fever, even if the diagnosis is not clear, to prevent heart involvement in future.
