the kittens have become so attached to each other that when they are in seperate rooms they cry for each other

also the one yr old is the mother of the kittens. She was a stray and about to die so we took her in not knowing she was pregnant. We ended up just keeping the kittens.

If they are spayed/neutered, up to date on shots, well fed and taken care of, then I would say it is acceptable. You must have to change the litterbox often though. I've always thought cats did better with a friend or two anyway.

That's a very nice little "family" whatever the county might have to say about it. As long as you can take care of them using the veterinarian for spaying/neutering ,shots, worming, flea protection etc. and any medical emergencies (especially if they go outside), that's not a great number.

Your older cat will need to be closely watched by the vet for possible problems with diabetes, hyperthyroidism, renal insufficiency, dental needs, etc. so that means a yearly blood panel to check on his/her health.

All the cats need quality food too and that means more $$ to provide them with the best food. Don't skimp in that department.

I am assuming the one year old cat produced the kittens so she needs to be spayed right away or you are on your way to being a pathetic "cat collector".

I used to have 5. It was too many, but only because after the kittens grew to adults (the last 2 I got), they started fighting with 2 of the others. It made for a nightmare house! Finally we had to keep them separated all the time, and then when we split (this was with my ex-husband), we split the cats up too, along the lines of who got along with whom.

Now I have 3, and they all love each other and get along great. 5 wasn't too many until they started fighting. Like you, they were all well taken care of and loved, but it didn't stop the fighting. So, good luck - you'll be fine unless they fight.

It depends on the size of the home or apartment. How often does their litter box get changed (and I hope you have more than one).

If you need an outside opinion if you have too many, have a family member, friend, or neighbor come over to your house. If you have too many, it will show in the home because if you get behind on cleaning up after them...well, ya know.

I've seen some very nasty houses due to people "hoarding" cats and getting more than they have room for and can handle. I'm sure you want the best for the animals, even if that means splitting a few of them up.

Any more than two is too many. They have a 20 year average life span. Can and do you keep up with the nasty litterbox? I had two cats, I had to clean the litterbox every morning and every evening and right before a workout. I couldn't stand the fumes. I also used clumping litter formulated for multiple cats. Also spent lots of money on deodorizers. I would never be able to visit a home where they didn't keep up with pet mess.
