why do they do this? is it because they are on some power trip? do they feel the need to try and get their last control rampage out before we turn 18? do they do this because they know we will turn 18 soon so that is why they do this? because my parents used to be alot more relaxed with me...but ever since i turned 17 they have been on this "there are rules in this house that WILL be enforced" trip. its not like im a bad kid.. i don't drink, i don't party, i don't do drugs and i get pretty good grades.... can anyone tell me why this is?

Truthfully, I think that MOST adults treat 17 year olds as fellow Adults. I think that PARENTS of 17 year olds, do tend to treat their own 17 year old differently than they would treat another 17 year old. I think it is because they see you daily, they see you in all sorts of circumstances and moods and they still see your childhood in you. They know instinctively that you are on the last lap of being under their control and they want to make sure that all the years of instructions, etc. that they had put into you really got to you and you understand before it is TOO LATE and you make any mistakes that could be avoided. They are somehow losing some kind of control over you even though they wouldn't see it that way more than likely. They truly do love you but are afraid of your upcoming Independence and they want to make sure you are ready to handle the life that is about to come your way. They may also see traits in your friends that they don't approve of and they think you will go and do some of the same things as the friends you hang with as soon as you hit that 18 mark. Miraculously, as soon as you do turn 18 -- the same parents will be different toward you in ways you don't even realize yet. Suddenly, you will be a true ADULT and you will be expected to pay for your own things ALL the time in stead of just sometimes. You will probably be left out of family decisions, etc and maybe some other things. BUT that is not because you are suddenly a nuisance to them, it is because they still want you to learn and grow and you have to do this by experience. If you are still going to be living at home, I think they will expect certain rules to be followed or you may be asked to move out. Not because of meanness but simply because of love and the pain involved in separating and stepping back a bit and letting you be more independent of their influence since you will be an adult by law now.
I am glad you don't drink and party and do drugs and you get good grades. That says so much right there!!!! You are going to be able to contribute to this world and influence your generation in a very positive way. Just remember that your parents may not even be the ones who are suddenly so UN-relaxed. Maybe your growing consciousness of your near birthday is affecting how you view their treatment of you. You may not even realize it but you are still developing and growing yourself and you may just be more aware and more concerned about their strictness, etc.

Hope this helps. :<)

It is a much the seventeen year old as the parents. They think rules are not ment for them as they are now adults. There behavior when they are told NO resembles that of a seven year old .As far as the parents it is an attempt to ready this person for the REAL WORLD that awaits there teenager very shortly .Also there are rules regardless of age that will be enforced if not by parents than by the police.

They are doing this because 17 year olds think they know everything but don't they are not as smart as they think they are. I am sure your a good kid but there is a fine line of being young and being an adult you are on the line so you just have to ride it out they will relax. They are scared who wouldn't be this day and age. Put yourself in there shoes and talk nicely to them about being trusted. Call if you will be late ect. and show how responsible you are it will help.

Heyyy, that's nothing. My dad treats me like a 7 years old even though I'm married now (I'm 24). Not in actions as much, but in speech. I wasn't even allowed to go out at night, unless it's church friends, and that we only go out for church activities or evangelism. I guess, because majority of teenagers nowadays get involved in certain activities that are reckless and sometimes may even cause death and they just don't want you to be a statistic. I guess, you can never really understand why they do that to you unless you have children of your own someday. Just be patient, that's all I can say.
