I think that if you buy a HDTV, you just need to plug in a HD-DVD or the PS3 (wish has the blue ray) to your HDTV and you'll see the videos and stuff in 1080p automatically. So you don't need the HD reciever.

I don't know if it works with the PS3, but I have the Xbox 360 (wish has the HD-DVD) and it worked grate on my HDTV.

HD-ready means that it's capable of receiving and displaying a high definition signal at either 720p,1080i or 1080p using a component video or digital input (hdmi or dvi) and does not have a built-in HD-capable tuner. To answer your question, no you do not need a hd receiver for the PS3. However since it does not have a tuner i would suggest you get a different tv that have a tuner. For a 37" lcd tv it should have a built-in tuner. It would be a better long term investment for you. You won't need a cable box to decode HD signal with a built-in tuner. Some better lcd manufacturers are Samsung, Panasonic, JVC, Vizio, Olevia and Sharp.

Although there are TV's that support 1080p and the PS3 supports 1080p there isn't an actual connector for that format. So the PS3 would be stuck at 1080i and the TV would just convert 1080i to 1080p.
