Manhattan would be ideal (although not just anywhere), but you may not be able to afford it.
For example, midtown Manhattan, the Upper West side (90s or below) or the Village would all be good areas.

Well, living in Queens would be ideal if you're looking generally for a more quiet lifestyle. To keep things interesting, I'd definitely recommend Manhattan. Avoid Midtown if you want to save yourself some morning headache, and avoid the uppermost part of Manhattan aswell (Harlem, Washington Heights, etc.) Living near Central Park has always proven to be a worthy benefit, so if you get the chance take it!

I'm single and I live in Bayside, Queens. It's a safe area, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants near public transportation.

i'd consider any borough except for Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens 'cuz those places are just too dangerous!!
what up somewhere up in upstate New York? it's much safer and i hear it's pretty glam. =)
