Espresso (Italian) is a concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing very hot, but not boiling, water under high pressure through coffee that has been ground to a consistency between extremely fine and powder

The qualitative definition of espresso includes a thicker consistency than drip coffee, a higher amount of dissolved solids than drip coffee per relative volume, and a serving size that is usually measured in shots, which is about 1.5oz. to 2oz in size.

And it is so small, because it is so strong and because the caffeine would be so much more intense, you can only take it in small amounts...or you'd be bouncing off the walls.

espresso is a kind of coffee, espresso beans. its very caffinated and very strong. its so small because it packs quite a punch in just a little shot. when you go to starbucks and order a latte or cappucino, its espresso that they use for the coffee taste, mixed with milk and other ingredients. Just a shot of espresso comes in the little cup.

Espresso is an extremely strong coffee. I believe it comes in a small cup because it's so strong.

an espresso is made with very, very finely ground, strong coffee beans and a small amount of very hot water. It is smaller than a regular coffee because less water is used, diluting the coffee less and giving it a stronger taste.
