Maybe you could write a report about all the different roles dogs fulfill. Talk about each of the roles a bit. Do a web search on Roles of a Canine.
Some I can think of: Helpers of disabled, Companions, Police Dogs, Dogs in the Military, Dogs in the Movies, Dogs that are heroes, Dogs that are terribly spoiled and dogs that are abused and neglected.
Dogs that help hunters, Dogs that herd sheep, ..you get the idea.

Do a report about Breed Specific Legislation. Take a stand on the issue and support it through the paper to explain why it would or would not work.

Good luck!

Consider researching the behavior of domestic dogs to their ancestors, wolves. You'll find some interesting characteristics that domestic dogs possess from being descendants of pack animals.

loyalty, companionship, how they make you feel you better if you are sick or depressed (healing aspects), overpopulation, how many dogs in pounds are "put to sleep" every day because they are not adopted, reason people put dogs in pounds (I could help you some with that..former shelter volunteer), normal costs to care for a pet for lifetime if nothing drastic happens (depends on size and animal), etc.
