before you fish a lake you research it. first check the Internet to see if there are any fishing reports. than buy a map, research the map for drop offs and changes in structure. make sure you get a topographic map. hot spots maps are great, i also have a computer program for fishing all lakes in the u.s. they show the places to fish(alot of time I find my own places). when you get to the lake, talk to the locals, see where to fish they will keep there secret spots but they will point you in the right direction. hit the water be observant for other boats, move to the spot they are at when they leave , maybe find similar structure, use your g.p.s. if you have one along with your map , your depth finder can be your best tool, look for the sharp dropoffs hope this helps its what i do.

Study a map of the lake and it will show the drop offs and holes, also use a fish finder/depth finder to se the contour of the bottom while on a boat. You can also locate some information on CD at places like Academy Sporting Goods, Gander Mountian, Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops.

Buy a hotspots map. If you are really into it, you can buy a GPS fishfinder and the program of the map for that lake and see on your screen just which holes your boat is parked over.

find a good fishfinder (eagle or lowrance) if you're in a boat. aquaviews are expensive but worth it. or if fishing from land, picture the lake if it were dry and try to read the contour of the land. structure is a bonus, better than 'holes'.

I would say...just look really close at the topographic lines on your maps....that'll get you to a hole.
