Crown down technique

Begin at the coronal portion with Gates-Gliddens

Continue down the canal, reducing the size of each file as you get closer to the apex

Your goal is to achieve a funnel shape

Description: In the crown down technique the dentist essentially works from the crown of the tooth, shaping the canal as he or she moves towards the apex. The instruments are used in a large to small sequence. The first instruments are the Gates-Gliddens which do the coronal flaring. The Peeso reamers or Hedstrom files follow in the mid-root region. Finally, progressively smaller files take the dentist towards the apex

I'm a dentist.

You must be a dental student.

Basically, you're instrumenting the coronal portions of the root and gradually going down to the apical portion.

I'm not sure, but I think that most rotary systems are crown down. At least the ones I use are.

crown down techique is better called step down technique

it's quite opposite to step up , in step down , preparation starts from coronal portio, then to to middle 3rd and finally reaching the apical portion , once we reach apex , step up procedure is done .

starting the preparation with greater size file at each time and decreasing the sizegradually . this is the preocedure i follow and is the best ,
