While I was frying potatoe slices tonight for dinner they were whistling in the pan and the kiddos want to know why(and so do I)?

The water inside the potatoes was escaping due to the heat and the water vapor made that noise

Potatoes contain a lot of water, and when the potato heats up, the water becomes steam. The steam escapes through the skin of the potato like steam through the narrow spout opening of a tea kettle. And just like a tea kettle, the potato whistles while it works! :)
