Bipolar Disorder will not stop him from going to college, if it is properly treated, but he will never be free from it - it's lifelong. Accidents will heal, though.
I've been bipolar for 25+ years, been to college, good job, married, kids, normal life.

Unfortunately your son may never fully recover from bipolar since there are no cures for this condition. He can, however, keep his symptoms under control by staying on his medication and having his medication monitored on a regular basis. I'm not sure if you are trying to say that your son was involved in an auto accident or if his bipolar condition contributed to an accident but, the physical injuries should heal within time. I happy to hear that your son is planning to go to college. When he does go, ask him to consider speaking with the Special Needs department as the staff in these departments work with the instructors and do everything possible to make the class time beneficial for the student. They help with preparing for tests, note taking, extended test times, etc. These services help many students.

Dear Ananth, above all you´ve got to have faith. You are not alone. There are million of people suffering from mental illnesses.
Thank God now there are medicines that treat people, diminish symptoms and improve the quality of life. I think that with a good psychiatrist and proper medication your son will be able to have an almost normal life. Bipolar disorder is caused by an unbalance in the brain neurotrasmiters, this causes the ups and downs. The spiritual explanation is that the person has a spirit attached to the aura. When the spirit rules, the person feels really sad and when the person rules he feels happy. Remember faith. Argentox2@yahoo.com

The bipolar illness will not keep him from going to college. As soon as he feels he can handle it, he can go. You will want to keep a close eye on him though. College is very stressful and someone needs to see that he is taking any medication prescribed and that he is doing OK with the stress.

Maybe youshould seek proper advice from a counsellor because this ia tricky one. I know of a person who leads a normal life with bipolar . I am not sure about what you mean about an accident.

keep him on his meds. he will never be free from disease but it is managable. get him to see a therapist who can help him identify his 'red flags' of when he is in trouble - getting depressed or manic. if and when he feels ready to go to college i'm sure he will. i wouldn't force the issue. you don't say what the accident is - did he attempt suicide? it is important that you all learn about the disease and keep him and possibly the entire family in treatment. good luck to you and to your son!

with that little piece of information it is impossible to say when he can go to college...
but make sure he gets under a psychiatrists care and is on meds and that will be a big step in helping him normalize his life....
