While in exile, Kunti, mother of the Pandavas often advised her sons that they share everything they have (or obtain) equally amongst themselves. During that time, Arjuna attended Draupadi's swayamvara and won her hand in marriage. When he returned, he triumphantly declared "Look mother, what I have brought!". Kunti, unmindful of what Arjuna was referring to, unassumingly asked her son to share whatever it is with his brothers. Thus, in order to obey their mother's order all five accepted Draupadi as their wife.

According to another source, when Sage Vyasa visits the family, he explains to Draupadi that her unique position as the wife of five brothers results from a certain incident in her previous birth. She had in that lifetime prayed to Lord Shiva to grant her a husband with five desired qualities. Lord Shiva, pleased with her devotion, tells her that it is very difficult to get a husband with all five qualities that she desired. But she sticks to her ground and asks for the same. Then Lord Shiva grants her wish saying that she would get the same in her next birth. Hence she gets married to five brothers each who represents a given quality.

Hindu brothers still dont follow this custom of sharing their wives even today because they will not afford to bite their self-conscious.

In mahabharatha, the five brothers share one wife due to some reasons - their mother told them to share equally whatever they won in the war that day without seeing what they got that day.... the story is about 2-3 thousand year old... obviously, it is not a custom to share wife among brothers in india... but just for your knowledge, there are some villages in remote india, where due to lack of women and resources, the custom still prevails and a wife is shared by brothers...

btw, do you know any other culture where the systems were so modern about 2-3 thousand years ago... most of the civilizations accept one man and many women, but only indian custom accepted a woman's freedom to wed 5 men and live with all of them... and she is still respected in the society... that too in ancient times... most modern civilizations also today accept mistresses for men, but they can not accept a married woman having relationships with other men.... Modern... is it???

It was truely accidental that the Pandavas shared one wife. This all happened because Kunti, their mother, without knowing what she is refering to, asked her sons to share what they have brought. It was again a wish of Droupadi in her previous Janma that she should have a husband as religious as Lord Yama, a husband as strong as Vayu, a husband as powerful as Indra and husband as smart and goodlooking as Ashwini brothers. She meditated Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva told her that it is impossible to have all these characters in one man. He blessed her with five husbands.
In this great land wife of elder brother is regarded as mother and wife of younger brother is regarded as daughter and there can not be any instance of brothers sharing single wife.

look at the hindus,...they never have done such a critical analysation of their books...they believe what they feel..and even can criticise their gods...no one is coming to eat them..they are free...they are just not paranoids..they belive in god as a primitive but valued being...they respect the perfect ideals...but do not carry them to the future ones...what doesnt suite is forgotten..

no one's bound to believe,..they b'lieve it or not...nobody's coming to cheak.
we b'lieve it as a religion,my dear. we do not take it any further.
we are not paranoids like the muslims ,..if anything went bad or out of religion, then we just forget bout that

soooo,.....bout marrying...YES OUR GODS WERE SIMPLY TOO COOL TO BE TRUE HA HA HA!
