The consensus of government agencies, health centers, veterinary groups, and plant and flower organizations that we've surveyed, however, is that poinsettias are not toxic and do not pose a health threat to children or pets.
so they are meant to be pretty safe, but they do look a bit scary when that milky sap comes out. Its just a tipical trait carried by plants in the Euphorbiacea family.

Poinsettia is posionous (low toxicity) Poinsettias are generally over-rated in toxicity. Mistletoe however can cause problems in your cat, cardiovascular. If ingested, poinsettias can be irritating to the mouth and stomach, and may cause mild vomiting or nausea. For a really good source of all kinds of plants that are harmful to your dog and your cat visit the iste below. It's a terrific resource!! I hope you can find this invaluable not just ow for the Christmas holiday when poinsettia's are popular but all year long for when you may have other plants around the house.

Yes, I know they are poisonous to cats for sure. My grandmothers cat was chewing on hers (not actually eating it but there were teeth marks on the leaves and flowers). He got very, very sick and she brought him immediately to the vet and gave the plant to the petless neighbor! The vet told her he was sick because of the poinsettia. If you have a cat, pass on this festive plant or buy fake. There is really no "safe" place to put it up from a cat - unless you have a fat can't that can't jump high!

I know that they are poisonous for cats to eat, but I think they must consume quite a bit before any major harm is done. I wouldn't recommend having them in your house if you have cats that mess with plants a good deal.

Yes, this plant is poisonous to animals and children as well, however the amount to be fatal would be the equivalent to eating over a hundred plants.just keep the plant in an area out of reach.
