I live in an apt, so I can't go finding studs or whatever. It's a fairly heavy picture in a frame. Should I use multiple nails or hooks or anything else?

Thanks!

Get the Hurcules hooks..You don't need to find a stud and it will hold 150 pounds and you can put them anywhere. They just punch through, spin around and anchors itself with the weight of the object being hung. They are great and put a very small hole in the wall. You can look up Hurcules hooks, or you can get a version of them on HSN.com that go by a different name, but work just the same. Excellent!!

3m offers hooks that attach to the wall and hang a good deal of weight - PLUS, they can be removed without leaving a mark on paint, or a hole in the wall
I've hung some rather heavy pictures that way. You can find them at target, walgreens and most hardware stores. They come in a red package. Ask the clerks and they will show you where they are....

You don't need a stud. You need an anchor since it's heavy. Go to a hardware or home store and look for a drywall anchor and follow the directions. If you have plaster look for a plaster anchor and follow those directions. Pictures and frames that aren't heavy don't require an anchor.

Hardware stores sell brass hooks that come with their own nails. They're label with a weight capacity. I have a heavy mirror that I used two hooks to hang. Better to be safe than sorry.

Right at the top of the wall, put a couple of very, very small nails (pins). Hang the picture from them on very thin picture hanging wire. Nobody will notice a couple of small holes near the wall ceiling junction, or the wires, when you remove the nails (pins).
