We have a runt out of our litter of 7 puppies and she is 1/3 the size of the others. They are 6 weeks old. We want to keep her but we want to know if she is healthy or not. She is starting on softened food though. She eats healthy and does the same things the others do but barking. She doesnt whine alot either.

being the runt of the litter doesn't necessarily mean she is ill...most vets think that the runts will catch up in size at about 3 months of age to 6 months of age...some just stay small...the nest way to determine her health is to bring her to the vet to make sure her heart is working fine and that there are no other problems...runts sometimes suffer from under-developed kidneys and liver which may cause problems but not to worry unless she starts to vomit or not eat. We had a lab puppy come in that was about 1/2 the size of his bro/sis....he was examined by two vets and found to be just as healthy, if not more. Goodluck!!!

Runts can sometimes be healthy......but sometimes not. They are usually smaller because they are malnurished by the other pups. Wait to adopt her....the runt of my dog's litter is perfectly healthy now....but sometimes the runt dies. Have her checked by a vet also.

As long as it's eating well and not showing trouble signs (mental or physical) it's probably fine.
