Well, there are the elastics which are wrapped around the brackets to hold the wire in and then there are the elastics that you can put on and remove yourself. Those are used to correct your bite. They can be worn different ways to correct different things such as cross-bite or overbite. If your not wearing them all of the time (or how you've been instructed) they won't work because every second they are off that you are supposed to have them on you lose all of your progress.
