Interim can take up to thirty days. They just look at police records, FBI, and motor bureu files, that kind of stuff. Its not real intensive. You can have it denied if they find out you lied about something. Like if you say you never committed a crime and then when they check your police record they find out about it. If you have financial issues you can be denied also.

Interim sercurity cleance is granted upon submission of request for clearance. Interim is a temporary security clearance untill the background check and interview are completed. The final determination is given after the checks are done. If there are problems in your clearance request, a letter will be mailed to you and you have a set amount of time to answer, or give explanation of the problem.

Well an interim clearance can be granted by your CO prior to your actual clearance being completed. I'm not sure how long it really takes to get completed because mine was lost acouple of times before finally receiving the actual thing.

Be prepared to wait the full 30 days. Security clearances are backed up. I have had a military clearance and then a DoD clearance as a civilian. When I went to work in Iraq I returned to the states after 18 months and my clearance as a civilian (to go to meetings at various palaces without an escort) still hadn't been completed.

It could take a while. Depends on the level. If it requires a background check it could take 18-24 months.
