I worked for many years in a prison, and many of my coworkers went on to become police officers. I think your answer would depend on the person you were asking. I think it is very easy to become enamored by your own sense of power and, in the end, police officers automatically receives respect, by virtue of title.
My husband still works in private security. When he goes to a certain town for wedding dances he stops at a particular gas station for coffee, since it is on his way. He always has to remind them to charge him. They do not seem to distinguish the uniforms.
I have met officers who get lost in their own egos. I think it is human nature. They abuse their powers by using it in off hours, or behaving in behavior that is illegal. Luckily, it is not every police officer.

Are you talking about all police officers in general?
There is always going to be someone in any profession who does something bad. Doctors, lawyers, priests, police officers, politicians... so yes, I am certain that there are a few officers who take advantage of their powers.
In general, most take their job and their oath very seriously, and uphold the law that they enforce by obeying it themselves.

Yes they do, but its not fair to stereotype them all. Only some of them do. I've had encounters with some very reasonable officers. I've had some encounters with others that use their badges as a means to be obnoxious, rude, abusive, condescending, and overall just be @$$holes to people for no other reason than they can do it, and get away with it.

I would figure its inevitable, they deal with the worst of the worst. In order to survive they have to develop tough attitudes. After a while I think its become second nature and they can't help it, but not all cops abuse their powers, some are very nice and helpful.

Police officers are just as human as everyone else. There are some who will always overstep their ethical, moral and legal boundaries at times. Most all men and women in law enforcement are just like you and I. If you feel that they have overstepped their boundaries you should go to their supervisor and lodge a protest. Remember their job is to protect and serve. Our job is to support them.

What benefit do I have by taking advantage of my power? Better yet, what power do I have over someone else? It's a job, simple as that.
