When the Iraqi army lost the war the occupying powers disbanded the army and police force and sent them all home with their weapons; no attempt was made to secure the vast supplies of ammunition. This was just the first big mistake.

it's been estimated in a classified report published by the Washington Post that the insurgency is earning anywhere from 2-6 million dollars a year. Most of it being paid by foreign countries as ransoms and from the citizens as ransom payments. This allows them to purchase weapons from virtually any country that is Anti-USA... Lebanon, Teran, Syria, Iran, African countries, even some of the eastern European countries that need the money.
