Say "I've been thinking" ( guy: about what? ) "Us" (what about us?) "Just that we haven't been working out lately and I think we should break up" ( guy might react in a crazy way ) "Let's just be friends at least we can have that" Then you can state the reasons why you wanted to break up with him and that you aren't happy with the conditions of the relationship.

You're not mean. You are honest. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Tell him the truth, and tell him you do want to be friends, and you're not saying it as a cliche'. He will probably be hurt for a while, and may even be mean towards you, but given time, hopefully you can be friends.

You should prolly talk to him in person and just tell him the truth. But if it is too hard write him a note or tell him over the internet or something like that.

Its not up to you to remain friends. Be honest with him and tell him you want out and he will let YOU know if he wants to be friends.
