Actually, religion was invented at the exact moment we lost our tails. The first human born without a tail looked at it's parents and said, "Oh my God, what the hell did you do to me!"
And, thus, the concepts of God and Hell were conceived in the exact same sentence. ;-)

All cultures and societies, all over the world and from time immemorial, have had some sort of spiritual life; propitiating the gods, rituals, sacred places and objects; almost always involving drugs of some sort, interestingly.
I don't agree with your supposition that we once had a tail (I've got a bicycle pump but that doesn't prove I ever owned a bicycle) - (Sorry, best I can do, it's past my bedtime) but, anyway, religion has been around since people have.
Those individuals who today profess to have no religion are often found, on closer inspection, to have put something else in its place.

It probably was something that happened very slowly. It’s hard to say when the social structure that human beings created to govern their very small communities became religion through a painfully slow transition. It was actually a part of evolution and evolution doesn’t work over night. We didn’t just suddenly wake up one day without tails.
I would say, based on my definition of religion, it was probably something that came about after we became more similar to what we are today – so in other words, Post-Tails.
Hope this helps :)

Anatomical point taken! When an awareness of mortality appeared, belief mechanisms were put in place to soften the `end`. This proved popular, more popular than reality, business boomed, Fiction Inc: was founded, and soon people in every country were claiming truth and buying Kalashnikovs. Soon nobody gave a `Monkeys` about the Coccyx.

There is no clear evidence of religion before the Neanderthals, so long after.

the human animal never had a tail
the tailbone is not a vestigal organ, it has a very good purpose it hold your innards up and keeps em from sagging down. Many muscles are attatches to it... and it is no surprize 10 of 10 doctors DO NOT recommend you removing it.
did you ever see someone who removed his tailbone?
NOT

You answered with the question I have asked a few times. We all still have a coccyx, so you have your answer. If anyone believes they don't have one, have an x-ray taken of the base of your spine.
