I have been dating my boyfriend for a long time know. He is 9 years older than me but kind of a family friend. My parents have always been concerned with him being too old for me. I came to study at the US this year and he came to work as a doctor in a hospital. Of course, the theme of marriage seems to worry everyone in the family. Yesterday I was talking to my boyfriend when my mother called. She stated telling me how she thought I sould break up, how I was goign to ruin my life if I stayed with him... he heard all this talk and later obviously felt bad. he didnt expect this to come form my mom. Today I told my mother that he was listening at the conversation and that only made things worse. Know she thinks he is even worse cause he should have not done that... I really don't like to have disagreements between my boyfriend and family? What should I do? How can I make things come back to the way they were?

you cant turn back the clock --- your parents will always love you --- he is not too old by any stretch of the imagination --- if you care for each other your parents will see this and in time accept him -- keep getting to know him

If you are old enough to make your own decisions and you and your boyfriend want to have a future together. If you are planning to get married later on then your family will have to learn to accept this sooner or later. If you are on your own and your mother calls tell her that you do not feel like discussing your personal feelings right now and then change the subject. The less that you talk about him the less she will bring the subject of the two of you up for discussion. I wish you good luck trying to live your own life.

You mostly likely can't since your parents don't like your boyfriend. You are going to have to choose between your boyfriend and your family. It seems you can't have both. You can try reasoning with both parties. If that fails then make a decision. Your family or your boyfriend?

Well really it is somehow a mess, but I will tell you what you could do, coz I had a similar situation.
I had a gf whom I loved very much. her parents didnt let her talk to me, I dont know why.
I told her to keep on meeting and everything as usual but in a discreet way without her parent's notice. At the end, life goes on, and you will grow up, and the parents will die, and you will be the one who will lose and regret.
So act in a discrete way and rescue your feelings and your poor bf.

There is one thing that you have to ask yourself.

1. Am I living my life for my family or am I living my life for me and to make me happy?

If your answer is "YES", then you need to be with this man and be happy. If your family really loves you, whether they think it is right or not, they should stand by you and support you in anything you do.
