I have a 6 month old Chihuahua puppy who I usually bathe about once a month (he stays inside and uses a litter box, so he's relatively clean). In the past two weeks or so, I've noticed "dandruff" like flakes on his back. Is it possible for dogs to get dandruff, and if so... is there a head-and-shoulders type solution for dogs?

It could be just a normal condition as he changes from puppy coat to adult coat. However, if it persists he should be checked by a vet, as it is also indicative of low thyroid function. You can use doggy medicated shampoos, but I would not recommend the Hartz Mountain one..but choose one from your local pet supply especially for dry or flaking skin..

Yes, dogs get dandruff too. My little Sage has dandruff. There is an aloe and oatmeal dog shampoo and conditioner available at Petco and my vet's office that I use on her. Try not to bathe so often. It dries out the coat and scalp, making dandruff worse. Good luck!

Dogs do get dandruff- although it's called something different for dogs. However, i would go and see your vet first just to make sure it isn't a reaction to something. My dog has alot of alergies which sometimes makes her skin flake so i use a special type of shampoo and conditioner you can only get from a vet. So just take your dog up to your vet and explain the problem so they can advise you on what you should do.

You can get shampoo or spray from a vet. It may cost a bit more than the local market. However, I work at a busy grocery store and we hardly ever sell dog shampoo or meds. We have lots on the shelf that has been there a really long time. Trust me go to the vet. You also need to rule out allergies as well.

Check with your veterinarian. He may just have dry skin. Perhaps he needs to have his diet changed, along with a dry skin bath regiment. Flaking of the skin in animals may be nothing or may be signs of a more serious condition only a qualified vet can answer that question, and only after checking your dog for a good number of problems that this condition may indicate.

He is probably just developing some dry skin irritation. Try giving him a medicated or oatmeal bath. (Medicated usually helps dogs like Head and Shoulders for us). This should clear up his problem.
You may also want to look into the food you are feeding him. A poor diet can also contribute to this.

The Munya's sister's pugs get doggie dandruff.. Sissy uses hartz mountain "coal tar" shampoo...it's in the orange bottle--smells funky as a shampoo (it's kinda pearly-copper colored) but once the doglet is dry, doggie smells great!

Follow all directions.

Don't support Hartz please....some of their products do horrible things to animals. You little chi is probably just getting dry skin from the weather change. I'm sure you have your heater on and the air can get dry in the winter. Use a good moisturizing shampoo...something with oatmeal in it. Something like this...http://www.earthbath.com/oatmeal&aloe_pint.html or http://www.earthbath.com/shampoo_bars.html the oatmeal shampoo bar

I would check with your vet first. Also you may be bathing him too often. I never bath my dog but do brush and comb her often. Her coat is nice and shiny and she doesn't smell dirty. Check with the vet first though.
