I'm a Muslim, but I asked my Grandfather that very question when I was a little girl. I asked how God was never was born but exists? I had a strong spirituality, but was puzzled about that very thing. You know what my Grandfather told me?
He said, "You'll know when he wants (its time for) you to know."
I forget a lot of things, but I always have remembered his answer it was very special. It told me in one sentence, God loves you and will honor you when you are ready. Four years later, it was time for me to know. And when I find out, i knew God had gave me the understanding.

Your a good Mom :)
I'm not very good with explaining this to a 6 year old. However, you might be able to find the right words to use from the description below.
Creation is everything that exists except God himself. This includes material as well as immaterial things and time. God is the creator, (Heb. 11:3) we are the creatures. The creator/creature distinction must be maintained to properly remain in humble relationship with God. We are not God, cannot create, nor can we help ourselves do good in order to be saved. Only God is God. Only He can create. And, only He has the ability to save man.
Also, one of my favorite places to get good Christian movies is Christian Cinema. They have a wonderful children's section.

First off, the God concept is 'high level' thinking and your daughter wouldn't understand the answer just yet. A simple answer would be to explain that God is us, and us is God. Life in the universe, as far as we know, has always existed. Don't think of God or the universe as beginning and ending. Those are terms used for descriptive purposes in the physical realm. And although we see God's handiwork, she is not of this realm. And that would be another reason that we have difficulty understanding the God concept.

I am sorry but if you have spent many hours in a church empire, you will have trouble explaining anything about God. Why?
The purpose of religious empires is to define God and Sin in such a way that it will build, maintain, and grow their empires.
Nothing else matters to them.
If you want to know about God, you will have to go to original texts of the Bible, The Old Testament in Hebbrew and Chaldean, the new testament in Greek.
Why? Because in 1611 the religious leaders of the time put pressure on the translators to twist the words in such a way that would build empires and who cared about revealing the truth.
Ok, OK, so you are not going to take my advice.
So do like the religious leaders have done to you; lie to your child.
Or you could just tell her that you don't know, but that God's message is this:
Harmony is harmony.
Disharmony is the only sin against God.

Well, if she made that question up herself she is intelligent for a 6 year old. And there is no good answer.
Of course you could find some cryptic and unintelligible answer in one of those Christian pages that sound like cults, but they are senseless and it would be unethical.

Your daughter might as well know the truth: The truth of God as "always being God, never being not God" is a mystery.
God veils our minds from many things.
We are called to love and trust Him, not to try to understand everything about Him.
We can't even see the back of our heads without help! We can't even cure the common cold! How can we even attempt to understand the infinity of God's existence? what we know is that the bible is God's great gift to us, giving us much knowledge of who He is, etc. But there are alot of things that aren't explained.
God bless!!

The answer you and she seeks is found in the Kabbalah, but it would be far, far too difficult to explain it to a six year old, more than likely. Either way, it would be true enough to say, "He exists without having being made. Nothing made him, not even himself."

God knows who made God and how and why?
But I have a feeling that God was not made by God.
God was created by man.

He didn't
if you can't have a watch without a watchmaker
and you can't have a painting without a painter
and you can't have creation without a creator
what makes you think you can have a God without a God-maker?

There is no answer,
He was just there....simple
That's something that Only God knows.. that we should not be asking nor worrying about. He was there and Always will be.
