There are many ways to say friend in Japanese. As some other people have pointed out, tomodachi 友達, is the most common. Yuujin 友人 is another slightly more formal way and best friend is shinyuu 親友. If your PC can handle the characters you should notice that there is a common character in all three (I.e. 友). This is the one that ultimately means friend. Stylistically and in poetry etc. tomo 友, can be used alone but in regular speech it would be best to stick with tomodachi 友達.

Tomoodachi is friend in Japanese. You pronounce it as it looks unlike English where it's written different to the way it sounds. Japanese is you say it as it looks!

tomodachi is my favorite word to use for "friend"

the literal symbols for it have the following:

1st kanji : people holding hands
2nd kanji : happiness over a road (a road to happiness)

the first one "tomo" has the same implication as friend and is acceptable by itself. i like using dachi with it as it describes more...
