You have to turn them into buckskin, and I dont think there is any way to do that that is as simple as "washing them with your hands."
The way you "cure" a deerskin is to tan it. There are a couple different methods of tanning your skins, but the most common one seems to be braintanning. Very basically, you soak the hide, scrape the hair off it, soak it in a solution of water and the brains of the deer, then you smoke it. Once again, that is a very basic breakdown of the process.
Try googling either "buckskin," or "braintan," and all kind of stuff should come up for you with much more information than I have provided.
Good luck.

I don't know if you want hairless leather or a hide with fur. If you want a fur hide to hang on the wall you can spread it out on plywood with the hair down. Tack it down so it don't shrink. Then spead a thick layer of salt on it. Once every couple of months mist it with water from a spray bottle. In 8 or 10 months you will have a preserved hide and it will be flexible and odor free.

You can send them to WB Place in Wisconsin.
For about $35, they will tan it for you and send it back.
Save about 5 or 6 skins, and you can trade them back in for a coat. They make other things. You pay a fee for them to make the product (about 40% of their sticker price if I recall).
It's kinda expensive in the long run. You can just have them tanned there and do whatever you wish too.
To save hours it takes to tan a skin, I'd rather just pay the $35.
Their website is:
