Auschwitz-Birkenau was a Nazi concentration camp in the Polish town of Oswiecim during WWII. It was a death camp for most. Nobody knows how many people were exterminated but estimates say over a million people died mostly Jews since documents were destroyed, and near the end of the war so many people were executed no records were kept. There were a few sub camps also used as labor camps. Those capable of walking were evacuated to Germany while those who were unable were rescued by the Russians. Terrible experiments were performed there by Dr Mengele. For a better answer visit the web sites provided and many more.

The aushwitz-berkinau death camp reached its peak from Mar-Nov 1944 with approximately 600,000 gassed. After Nov 1944, as the Red Army approached from the East, the SS began dismantling the ovens and other evidence of their barbarity.
What gets me is the number of 'good' Germans it took to make the 'final solution to the Jewish question' possible. From the local civil service bureaucrats, to the railroad men, from the good folks at IG Farben that supplied the Zyclon-B (4 1/2 tons per month), to the civilian contractors who built the crematoria and other camp accoutrements, to the SS thugs running the camp...it was a national affair on a scale that is beyond imagination.

This PBS link is extremely informative and the source is above reproach.

EDIT:
I am adding to my initial answer because I see that a lot of the replies to your question leave a lot to be desired. I am not trying to flame anyone but the answers are quite typical of what you can expect to get in reply to any question about Germany and WWII.
The fact is that Auschwitz was all the things they say it was (except for that Holocaust-denier fellow and even he may have a somewhat valid point since no one really knows for sure how many people died there).
What we do know for sure though was that Auschwitz was not just a memorial or a single isolated event or even just an ugly souvenir of the great evil that men can produce.
Instead, she remains a cold reminder of what can happen when a people become weak and afraid to stand up for what they know in their heart is right but refrain because they are either cowards or think things will never get that bad. In terms of WWII, that was everyone from the US government which returned fleeing Jews who arrived here by the boatload, the Brits for turning away millions of fleeing minority children although they did eventually accept thousands via the Kindertransport system and Germany's neighbors for laughing at and dismissing Hitler's madness until it was too late.
Last but certainly not least; were the German people who let their own arrogance, apathy and ignorance lull them into a false sense of righteousness, indignation and lethal antipathy. No matter what anyone tries to claim today, Hitler could never have come to power without the implicit or explicit support/compliance of the German people... and since the failure to stand up and actively try to prevent blatant wrong is just as bad as participating in the wrong, the entire world, but specifically, the German people, were guilty of the human hell that was Auschwitz.
The greatest disgrace of modern times is that we have already forgotten or failed to educate ourselves about the extent of how that guilt came about and why.

I had the privilege of hearing a lecturer at the Museum of Tolerance in L.A. who survived Auschwitz. She was from Poland, and a Jew, and the only member of her family that made it through.
She talked about being rounded up with her family and riding on the train, and how the younger stronger people stood for the entire trip so that the old and weak could lie down. Her father died on that train.
The Germans shaved her hair off and tattooed her arm, they stripped off her clothes and she had to stand outside, naked and cold for hours until she was given clothing.
After she was given clothing, they separated her from her mother and sister and she never saw them again.
When the camp was liberated by the Soviets, (she had been left behind by the Germans because she was nearly dead from typhoid fever) she said that the Soviet army medic was crying because he had never seen so many sick and dying people.

a million died there
the allies would not bomb the rail lines to the camps at the end of the war because they did not want such a big refugee crisis
jews -gypsies - polish - russian prisoners were the majority of the victims
they were gassed with Zyclon B and then put into ovens and cremated -
all the gold was taken off the jews and melted into bars - children died there too -
there were trains everyday and the prisoners came in cattle cars - they **** and piss on each other treated as animals
the germans even used jews to kill jews to drop the Zyclon B gas - and they did it because they did it to survive

More people died there than at any other of the camps. The auther Elie Weisel was there with his father as well. Dr. Mengle, a horible docter preformed experiments on prisoners there.

Auschwitz was built in Western Poland with one purpose and one purpose only: to speed up the slaughter of Jews. (It was also used to kill gypsies and Soviet POWs.) People went there to die. There, Joseph Mengele performed experiements on twins that no self-respecting doctor would perform on rats.

Some say millions died there when in fact only 500k to 700k did. Don't believe everything you read. The numbers have been trumped up by the jews since it happened. There is absolutley no evidence that millions died there.
