Sometimes ingrown toenails are too big to take out yourself. I have three brothers and one of them seems to always have a gross ingrom toenail. One even went to get it taken out and the doctor let him bring it home and it was over a centimeter long!!

Also...dont cut your toenails really short...thats the worse advice ever!! Cut straight across...so that you can see the corner of each toenail, that way you know that they are growing up and not into your skin!!

My boyfriend has had many ingrown toe nails. The best way to get rid of them is going to a podiatrist, because they'll get at the root and this will make it so you don't have them in the future. If you do it yourself, or go to your regular doctor, you or they won't get the root and you'll probally have an ingrown toe nail again.

Try keeping the nail cut very short. If it's already to the point of being ingrown and you have a high pain tolerance you can always "dig" it out yourself and then cut the nail back. After that try some hydrogen peroxide, Neosporin and a Band-Aid to prevent infection. Good luck, they can be painful.

Ooh, I just got over that and it is so very painful. It was on the big toe of my right foot. I tried for days to get it under control, but had to eventually go to the dr. where he gave me antibiotics and antib cream. Soaked the foot in Epsom Salts, and covered it with a bandaid daily. Took a good week for the pain to subside and finally it is ok now. The dr. told me an infection like this just becomes worse.

Go to the doctor and have them fix it for you. (You may need antiobiotics if its particularly bad anyways.) That way you can have the doctor properly explain to you how to fix it yourself the next time, because if you don't cut it properly, you could make it worse.
