How many people in Indiana claim to be insured, but aren't? What is an estimated number of accidents in Indiana in which one or both parties were uninsured?

Does anyone know around how many people in Indiana don't have car insurance? An estimated number or percentage would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

When uninsured drivers get into crashes, it could well be the first time their status comes to light. The state of Indiana earns $7 million a year in fines from uninsured drivers who are caught.

But if you have car insurance, chances are that you are also paying the price for 12 percent of Indiana drivers not to have insurance. You are paying the price twice: first in uninsured motorist premiums and as a deductible if you get into an accident with an uninsured motorist.

Indiana state law says you have to have proof of insurance to get your plates, so why are so many insurance dodgers driving on the road? "A lot of people purchase insurance temporarily to get their license plates renewed and then cancel their insurance,” explained Mike Steffey, an insurance agent.

The insurance industry says it's a problem. In fact, Steve Williams of the Insurance Institute of Indiana says the number of uninsured drivers out there is bigger than 12 percent.
