You are a very considerate owner for thinking about your dog's needs before your own, you were very strong to do this! Just remember what you have done was for his benefit and he's probably thanking you because he's not lonely anymore. Just give yourself a bit of time :)

When my dog got hit by a car, we had to call animal control or whoever (I was young so I didn't make the call) to, basically, pick up the pieces. I remember thinking that I would feel sad every day from missing her.
But, surprisingly, I just went back school on Monday and everything was normal. No unstoppable tears. No break-downs in the middle of class. I was alright.
What I'm saying is that while it may seem like you'll miss him every day, it'll pass. You'll never forget your dog, but like you said: he's in a new home. It's a new adventure for him, and I bet you could visit hime some day.

You did right by the dog. Spent my working life without a dog. Now I'm retired I'm arranging to get an Irish Red Setter.
I still think of the Boxer that we had when I was a boy.
It annoys me to see lonely dogs at home while owners leave them all day.
Your action qualifies as "tough love".
Congrats

I know it sounds corny but time is a great healer and it will get easier - I'm sorry to see how judgemental some of the other answers here have been , especially as we do not fully know your circumstances that have led to your decision - people who judge usually have a guilty conscience, let he who is without sin cast the first stone, have these people really never been in a position where they've had to let a loved one go?

It will take a while, but you will get used to it.
He was one of the family and it is just like losing a loved one, and you will be mourning in a way.
I had to put my dog down after he got athritis and was going blind. We had him for 14 years. I still miss him yet.
The conciliation is that he has gone to a good loving home and you know that he will be well looked after and cared for.

i do not agree with most of the comments here, a dog is for life and you would not 'get rid of your children' for work commitments would you?
There are always solutions to help you keep your dog, how do you think he is feeling right now? He will think his has been abandoned and will miss you badly.Sorry i have more sympathy for the dog.

It will take as long as it takes to find something else to take his place . This doesn'r have to be another dog but maybe another interest .Sorry about your dog but at least you know he will be happy in his new home .Start looking for a new hobby .

He's a dog! I miss mine, too. She was a solid black wolf hybrid. She got struck by lightning. But it is not the end of the world. Of course, the horse keeps us plenty busy.

if you loved really loved him/her you'll will never forget him/her
how could you forget a loved one??
if your mom or dad died would you ever just quit caring and forget them?
i didnt think so??
keep working and until things slow down at your work just stay busy!!
then when your ready get a new puppy.
so i bet you will never forget your dog but always remember the good things
and how happy he is at his new home
if you love him/her you should know that you gave him/her to a good home.
