I recently wiped my old computer's harddrive that had XP on it from an upgrade, but originally had Windows 98. I was told that the OS is stored on a partition of the computer that cannot be wiped, & therefore you reinstall the OS from there. How do I do this - When the computer turns on, there is a black screen that just says A: ?

Start the computer with the Windows XP disc in the drive. When it asks to boot from CD, do it. From there, you must go to the menu where you would normally reinstall Windows. If there is a partition there, you can delete it and continue reinstalling the OS.

Reboot with the Windows XP CD in the drive and boot from it - that'll get you where you need to be to manage your partitions and reinstall.

You should just pop in the WINXP disc and go from there. It lets you know what to do.
