they last depending on how severe they are. put aloe vera on your burns and some medicine that ends in "cain". that means it is a pain reliever. you can find sunburn relief gel in your local grocery store or wal-mart. make sure you stay out of the sun until it goes away..otherwise your burns will get worse. it may sound painful..but hot showers are the best thing for your burns..it actually pulls the heat out of it..

Try using aloe it works wonders. It may take a few days to a week depending if you are peeling or not. You don't necessarily have to stay out of the sun, but when you go out put on lots of sunscreen.

YOU BETTER STAY OUT OF THE SUN or you will prolong the pain and do more damage to your skin. 3days is typical depending on the severity of the burn. Remeber , listen to your dermatologist: MINIMUN EXPOSURE TO SUN ESPECIALLY BETWEEN 10am-2pm when UV radiation is strongest. and use SUNSCREEN, HATS, Shades, ,,and make sure you reapply when you go for a dip. GOSH i sound like my derm DOC!

According to:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003227.htm#Home%20Care
" The pain is worst between 6 and 48 hours after sun exposure."
Also, check the same site for treatment.
