Little kids watch TV even in their SUV's Why can't parents deal with their children like they used to. instead talking or singing with them they are always popping in a video?

Plus I know a bunch of you are going to say you don't do it. But we all know you do The Childrens video industry is a multi billion doller industry and it did not get that way without the majority of parents helping out

Bubbles and Kristen have it wrong. I do have kids and my mom was a single mom. She just spent time with us and didn't use housework as an excuse.

It is hard to have kids no one is suggesting otherwise but popping in a video is the easy way out. If you are a single parent well it is that much harder but considering the evidence of what too much tv does to your kids you need to suck it up and deal with it. The wiggles are not the cure for your frustration they will only add to them later on

I TOTALLY agree with you! Kids these days are so used to watching tv for everything! I have been lucky so far, my son who is now 17 months old is totally uninterrested in tv. He just started paying attention to Barney, but even that only lasts like 5-10 min. It would be hard as a parent to say no to your kids when they want to watch tv all day, especially because that would mean more time to myself when I need it, (like to just go to the bathroom!) but in the end I know that I would have to fight to do that because I cant stand lazy kids!

Sometimes I pop in the occasional video to keep my kids occupied while I get some housework done. But I ALWAYS make sure that I spend plenty of time with them everyday ( I am a SAHM). We don't even have cable or satellite and it's because we choose not to. We get 2 stations here and one is PBS. They watch maybe 1 hour of TV a day. They are 3 and 4 and honestly much prefer playing with their hot wheels and toys. When it's good weather, they are outside all the time. Their daddy is an outdoorsy type and they love getting outside with him. I don't find it hard to deal with my kids. They have their moments but are pretty well behaved. I do agree with the fact that some parents use TV a little too much, but I think alot of it comes with both parents having to work alot and still having to take care of the home as well. Lives are so stressful and fast paced now-a-days. Kids are having to grow up so fast. That's why I thank God for having the opportunity to stay home with my kids.

I have a removable DVD player in my van, we bought it for our cross country trip this summer. We figured that 6000 km in 6/7 days there was going to be times that we needed a movie break. Since we arrived back home 3 months ago the DVD player has been in a closet! The only day that the kids watched more than one movie was a 16 hour drive in one day, then they watched 2. Most of the time we sang, practised our German and talked about where we were. At home we do not even have cable, we have "rabbit ear" antenna on top of our TV. You shouldn't judge a family by what you see on the outside, now if you know them that is completely different :)

I agree! I mean, if it's a really long car trip, sure pop in a video to keep them occupied. But these people going from here to there in 10 minutes and keeping their kids quiet with a video is ridiculous.

You know what else I find utterly ridiculous? These parents who buy all this LeapFrog and Baby Einstein stuff. Whatever happened to sitting down and teaching your child instead of throwing a toy at them or popping in a video?

Our society is definitely sinking by the minute.

I was just talking about this with my husband the other day...what ever happened to families TALKING on a long car trip?! My parents took us camping EVERY summer when we were little and we crossed the US ~ My father is a history buff and he'd tell us something on the way THROUGH a state and then when we were heading home...He'd quiz us...who ever got the most answers right got to pick the place we would stop for dinner!! We have a mini van with NO VCR!! I don't want one...I won't get one...Car trips are meant for a family to have quality time....We all get to pick music to listen to also...makes it a more enjoyable ride when you include everyone!

I try to spend sometime everyday palying games, reading or singing with my child. Sometimes I do pop her in front of the TV, and personally I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Sometimes parents need a moment to keep their sanity. As a parent, I would think you know that.

I agree with you. The majority of parents do have their kids watch videos and stuff but we honestly don't. We have a 13" tv that we keep in our bedroom closet and pull out twice a year to watch a program our church puts out (no it's not a children's program). We boycott Disney and children's television and stuff. Not everyone puts their kids in front of the TV. Some of us have actually done some research on what it does to kids' brains.

Do you have kids??? Probably not from the sounds of it. While I don't have a TV in my car and dont plan on getting one ever. I do get videos for my children to watch at home. There are a lot of educational and fun videos for kids to watch. They are having fun and learning at the same time. My 18mo loves Blues Clues he dances and repeats and even answers Steve's (its an old Blues Clues video) questions. Whats the big deal? When you have kids, your opinion will change. Until then: honey you have no right to pass judgment on me or anyone else. Take Care.

Concentrate on raising your own kids and leave the other parents to do what they think is best. You might be a wonderful parent, but criticizing other parents isn't going to make you happy.

I don't do this. Honestly!
I find it sad that parents rely on TVs as babysitters, instead of spending time with their children.
I love to sing nursery rhymes to my daughter when we are travelling!
