Wow, I'm amazed that not one of these people who answered has any idea what they are talking about.
There is no harm in taking these drugs together, provided that valium isn't abused.
Zoloft and Valium are in two entirely seperate classes of drugs and can work together as an adjunct treatment to general anxiety disorder and depression.
Zoloft works on modulating the serotonin levels in your brain, by keeping it around longer, thus lightening your moods and releaving depression.
Valium (diazepam) is a benzodiazepine. These drugs are used primarily in treating anxiety and are also available in injectible form as an anistetic for surgical procedures. Essentially, if you take enough benzodiazepine, you'll slip into a coma. It won't kill you, but if you drink and take benzodiazepine will disable your bodies system that rejects the alcohol (puking) and the toxicity of the booze will kill you.
Benzodiazepines work on modulating the neurotransmitter GABA, which controls the inhibitory functions of the Central Nervous System (basically it will slowely turn you into jelly for a little bit). Modulating GABA will not mess with Zoloft.
However, benzodiazepines are very addictive. If abused, one can experience very harsh withdrawal that will lead to such deep depression, including suicidal idiation. This is the only time it can mess up the zoloft, but if taken at low doses, you'll be fine.

Many doctors prescribe Valium or Xanax when first starting a patient on Zoloft (especially for Panic Disorder). Zoloft can initially cause an increase in anxiety (esp. evident in Panic sufferers) and the Valium counteracts this until your body adjusts to the Zoloft, at which time some doctors discontinue the Valium.
However, if your Panic or Anxiety is severe, they might be continued together indefinetly.

Well, you COULD, but you shouldn't have to. Zoloft has a tendency is a lot of its users to make them feel a bit anxious, or "speeded-up." Also, alot of people lose weight on Zoloft--and it's cousin Prozac--since it has almost an amphetamine quality to it in SOME patients. What I suggest you do is, tell your doc you are having some anxiety (I assume that's why you want to take Valium) and he can prescribe you a different anti-depressant that has more calming effects than Zoloft. Like Paxil or Wellbutrin, perhaps. You should never have to take one drug so as to relieve the side effect from another!

Paul, stand close to and then beat your head against a brick wall. Not making any sense? No, and neither is this totally unjustified pay rise for MP's. Does it mean that now regulation to prevent them stealing and shafting us is in place that they now expect us to cough up even more money? It's only allowed if they manage to vote it through. Email your MP and tell him to back off!

you can, but be aware, the two potentiate each other, in other words, the side effects are much stronger. Be very careful doing this only under a doctor's supervision.

valium is a downer and zoloft is to raise your spirits. to improve your mood... be careful... i see valium as a drug you should only use as a "as neeeded" basis and VERY seldom.
