Hi there...Common odours that are effective deterrents for cats are:
Citronella works best for cats as well as citrus scents such as orange or lemon (primarily towards cats), and others so long as they cannot be ingested or sprayed on the cat (stored in a safe vented container) cayenne pepper, coffee grounds, pipe tobacco, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and mustard oil.
"Havahart's Cat Repellent" uses capsaicin pepper and oil of mustard as its active ingredients. It repels by both taste and odor, has a lemon scent.
Every animal responds differently to each of these. Some will not be phased by them and others will be quite revolting.
For training purposes they are applied on items that are to encourage avoidance behaviours and not for use with a squirt bottle as they could harm the eyes or respiratory system. Test each substance and observe to see which works as a deterrent so that accidental injestion does not occur as some could then be fatal.
Many people believe mothballs work, however they are considered toxic and should NOT be used. Here's more information on this:
http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/ope/enotes/showarticle.cfm?id=89
MOTHBALLS are toxic to cats which contains the ingredient Naphthalene. Mothballs are approximately twice as toxic as paradichlorobenzene, and cats are especially sensitive to naphthalene. Signs of ingestion of naphthalene mothballs include emesis, weakness, lethargy, brown-colored mucous membranes and collapses. Paradichlorobenzene mothballs may cause GI upset, ataxia, disorientation, and depression. Elevations in liver serum biochemical values may occur within 72 hours of indigestion.

Cats don't like the smell of citrus so sometimes you can put orange peel on your stuff and that will keep kitty away. But maybe it is, as someone said, something you have to train the cat to do, like if you don't want the cat to go in the bedroom then keep the door closed. Cayenne pepper sounds a little extreme and don't forget that cats like to get their revenge if you are mean.

I used to date a girl who used a squirt bottle and shot the cat when it went around places where it wasn't supposed to be. The cayenne pepper thing seems rather cruel. What if the cat get's the pepper in it's eyes, would you want to have cayenne pepper in your eyes?
The squirt bottle/squirt gun will provide a lot of negative reinforcement in a humane, and satisfying manner.

Of course you can use Cayenne pepper. You can also put him on fire or plain shoot him.
However, you can also try to educate him with understanding and patience, and mostly with your presence. I had pretty good results by constantly repeating what I wanted and didn’t want.
Best method: just be with your cat and when he does something wrong, you hiss at him in a loud way or/and blow directly into his face. If you do that long enough, you’ll marvel at a well-behaved cat.
If you love your cat, you will put in this little effort.

cayenne pepper can get messy but it can help...some cats however like the taste...you can also try bitter apple or bitter orange and spray that on the furniture, clothes, or whatever you wish. These won't leave colors or marks on the objects. Goodluck!

You can use that on dogs, but cats will do what they want, dogs have a better smeller than cats, so the pepper deters them quickly, you just need to cat proof your home, if you ave to or can give the cat their own room, and go spend time with them in there. Cats unlike dogs dont have to have extreme amounts of attention, remember you cat owns you, you dont own your cat. One reason i prefer not to have them, but i love them as long as they own someone else.

It might work and it might not.
Before you get all upset, I spent 45 minutes waiting on the local news, just so I could watch the weather forecast. (I wanted to golf this afternoon)
Well after I wait, Some Sauve and Over Educated MORON comes on the screen with the weather report.
He said with a straight face. "There is a fifty percent chance of rain today"
Well how about that. Really going out on a limb there, aren't we?
So I say to you, yeah it might work.
