I'm from the old school of hairdressers - it was always 72 hours. I didn't know people still had them though!

OMG six hours for a perm..??? extra long hair??? I hope.. Well you can wet it in the shower. I only recommend shampooing if you think it is too curly. Shampooing removes 20% of the curl. I have given perms that I thought were too tight and after I neutralized I shampooed and then used a little more neutralizer. It is important not to shampoo for 24 hours and some directions say 72 but that is not always right. The most popular perms say 24 hours and the classes I took the technicians said that the full neutralizing process takes 24 hours. You should follow your hairdressers instructions in case you have a problem and don't want to void the verbal warranty.

After a perm the hair must neutralize for another 72 hours by using the oxygen in the air. Any shampoo, hot water, or heavy soap, will reopen the cuticle on the hair shaft and possible rearranging, the chemical bond causing the hair to revert in it's natural state, which at the time before the hair was permed was straight. After 72 hours the hair is completely neutralized , with less changes of relaxing the hair.

If it's your first perm, your should wait 24 hours. If you wash your hair any sooner then the ingredients in the shampoo will interfere with the chemicals in the perm, causing your perm to 'undo'. If you've had a perm before then your hair is adjusted to the chemicals and it won't hurt your perm. Be sure that when you do wash it, use the same product your normally do. That way your hair can get used to it being used with the perm.

Just do not wash it the first 24 hrs. You can wet it, but if you shampoo, the chemicals in the shampoo can pull out your perm.

48 hours to shampoo...you can wet it down and use product to restyle it. I had a perm once that I hated and I shampood it immediately, and it didn't do anything-but that doesn't mean it won't loosen YOUR perm-mine was way overprocessed and damaged my hair soooo.... I am a hairstylist and you can trust my above advice-48 and you can wet it.....btw-I don't care if your hair is to your behind, it shouldn't take 6 hrs to perm it

My stylist says 48 hours but if u can stand it I think 72 hours is better. You can get it wet, just not wash it or manipulate it anyway.

wetting it is ok, you need to wait longer to wash it at least 48 hours. Do not put conditioner in it until then.
