i am trying to trace somebody who has moved back to italy. We think he may have passed away and am trying to trace any oficial records. Have not as yet found any public records in italy theat I can access

Hey Karan,

Here are some sites that I have been finding on Italy Vital Records and Genealogy. Hope they help you.

"Research conducted in Italian records (such as microfilms) outside Italy does not bring the researcher into direct contact with these factors. However, the researcher who deals directly with those responsible for Italian records retained in Italy will probably encounter challenging conditions at some point. These involve, among others, factors such as negotiation for archival access, apathetic attitudes on the part of civil or church officials, and the lengthy delays imposed by these issues." 1

You need to know the city he lived in and then you might be able to get Church records.

You can't, unless you ask the police and ask for missing people, you never know, he could be alive.
