i am trying to trace somebody who has moved back to italy. We think he may have passed away and am trying to trace any oficial records. Have not as yet found any public records in italy theat I can access

Here are some sites that I have been finding on Italy Vital Records and Genealogy. Hope they help you.

However, the researcher who deals directly with those responsible for Italian records retained in Italy will probably encounter challenging conditions at some point. You need to know the city he lived in and then you might be able to get Church records.

You can't, unless you ask the police and ask for missing people, you never know, he could be alive.
