I use to attend a church in which the pastor preached the same thing... that "thou shalt not partake of anything harmful to your body" and that, therefore, it is wrong to consume alcohol and smoke cigarettes.

That same pastor ate like a "pig".

My point? Well, one of the basic beliefs in Christianity is that we should "strive to be Christ-like". Christians also look very negatively upon hypocrisy.

I love asking these turds if they are prepared to give up foods that are high in cholesterol and fat, stop drinking beverages that are loaded with high fructose corn syrup, and so on. They usually look at me as though I just "took the Lord's name in vain". LOL!
Well, a sin is a sin is a sin.
People should put up or shut up.

You might consider that the man may be a recovering alcoholic who is in a 12 step program. AA almost encourages smoking as a replacement for drinking because the action of smoking occupies the mouth while the nicotine keeps you on an even keel while you keep yourself from drinking. Forgive the line, but for an alcoholic, smoking would be the lesser of two evils.

Because of our fallen nature we will sin. Even Christians will sin because of our fallen nature. However, we are instructed of God to take care of what He has given us to possess...even our bodies. But, in time our bodies will eventually die. While in possession of our bodies we should do everything to keep ourselves healthy. There are Scripture that makes it permissible and even beneficial to consume wine and other beverages with alcoholic content. But remember, that in biblical time the wine that was fermented in those days was like Kool-Aid compared to the refined fermenting processes of our day. I don't agree that this man would advise another not to drink alcohol and then turn to smoke a cigarette. There is a problem with his reasoning. His thinking is flawed. If he doesn't drink this is good. But as you can see he does smoke. In some areas of our lives we are strong and in others we are weak. If he is a Christian he needs to keep his eyes on God and continue to pick up his cross daily and follow Jesus. Maybe in time and with effort he will overcome his tobacco habit. I certainly hope so.

Neither are good for the body in excess but drinking does immediate harm, where smoking probably wont harm you until late in life if it harms you at all. I often find it funny how car accidents are the leading cause of death in any age group, and people will hollar at me for smoking right before they get into their 2 ton death capsules LOL

Anything that harms the body is not a good thing.

The Bible tells us to do everything in moderation. Smoking even in moderation is harmful not only to the smoker but also those around them.

Drinking in moderation (red wine) has proven to be helpful to men but not so much in women.

The Scriptures to speak against beer and heavier alcohols.

Over eating is another one. When done in moderation, is good. When it goes past moderation and is used as "comfort" it too is bad.

Need I go on?

This person is greatly deceived. anything that is not good for us is destruction of the temple of God, therefore wrong and a sin. cigarettes are sin, alcohol is sin, drinking is sin, eating too much fat is sin. but not all heavy ppl are sinners. some have low metabolism, eat healthy and exercise, yet stay heavy, and many thin ppl eat a lot and just dont gain.its not about size, its how we treat our bodies and our minds.
great question and I am glad you had discernment to see the absurdity of his comments. press on dear person. God is calling.

both can be hazardous to one's health I agree. as far as my personal habits on these are I can never have anything with alcohol because of a medical condition. the only time I smoke is in
" Ceremony " and this is not enough to harm one much as this occurs maybe 4 to 6 times a year.

No one is perfect. That's like my friend's mom. She's addicted to cigarrettes however, she doesn't want my friend (her daughter) to be addicted. So the mom tells her daughter don't smoke; however, she smokes.
People always think that Christians are suppose to be perfect but that's not what Christianity is about. But Christians know that no one is perfect, but their goal is to strive to be like Jesus Christ. That older man was trying to protect you however, he himself is having problems. So I don't think he should tell what others should do before he fix himself up. Anyway, you shouldn't judge a whole group based on one person. Haven't you ever told someone not to do something, but you did it yourself? The important thing is that you realized it was wrong.. but I guess someone needs to tell the old man that smoking is wrong. lol

That's rediculous. Not just the fact that we was smoking, but to say that drinking is a sin is rediculous. Hello? Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine. Almost anything in moderation is okay. the Bible just says to not be drunk with wine but by the Holy Spirit.

Kind of like when men say that women should not wear pants because it is sinful and then whip out a cigarette and let dirty words fly.I do not care about what other people do.I just do NOT like being told how I should live.
