It is not a disease and I will go further it is not usually a choice either. You always have those girls who make out at a party because it is cool and that is a choice but take that aside. I know a girl who was just born gay. I could tell even when she was as young as 4 or 5. She was just so tomboyish and leaned toward it more the older she got. She admits that she has always known too - as far back as she can remember she has known. Her sister who is a year and a half younger is the polar opposite and is very girly and is married to a man. It is a completely normal natural thing for sure. Anything you are born having a tendency toward is natural. The thing is, if people do not like it then fine but if you cannot tolerate it then it is your problem not anyone else's. I do not like when people dress like the 80's want their clothes back but I don't think that person has a disease. It is not hurting me so I just say whatever and go about my business.

Homosexuality is defined as sexual and romantic attraction between individuals of the same sex.
Some people believe that homosexual behavior is wrong but do not believe that the homosexual orientation is chosen. This often leads to the conclusion that people who are non-heterosexuals should be treated with respect or compassion, but that they should be discouraged from acting on their "immoral" and spontaneous erotic desires.
Though science currently has no definitive answer to the question, most scientific evidence seems to suggest that genetics is the largest factor affecting sexuality.
Sexual orientation emerges for most people in early adolescence without any prior sexual experience.

Wow. There's a dangerous question these days. No I do not believe it is a disease. I don't believe there is a "gay" gene in spite of the desperate efforts of many to find one. I believe that homosexuality is a conscious choice by individuals who find it more comfortable to have sex with somebody else of the same sex because it is less stressful and more fun for them. I also believe that the reasons for becoming a "gay" person are very very different for men compared to women. With men, its mostly for sex. With women, I think its more to have control and authority that they can't find with male partners.

You've restored my faith in mankind! Unanimously people answering this question in an enlightened and tolerant way! Nice one. I'd like to know your views though.

Anyway - no it's not a disease. It's a way of life in our society that is totally acceptable and normal. Why are people gay? No idea. Could be that people are born with an inclination, or it could be they just develop a taste for one sex or the other or both.

Maybe actually we're born with a taste for both, and over time we lose the feelings for one of the sexes based on what we experience around us. You never know!

PS - Hmmmm. Looks like I spoke too soon - the bigoted homophobes have arrived!

Your going to get a lot of one sided baised answers because most people really don't know much about how sexuality works. They are going to give me tons of thumbs downs for sure.

I know for a fact that it's both genetic or learned depending on the person. Some are born Gay, some choose to live that lifestyle. And yes there are reasons why some people would choose to do that. It's not a black and white issue, but uneducated people make it that way.

Some are born genetically to be gay, but to call it a disease instead of saying it;s genetic is a false label I think that some people use out of negativity against the gays.

Homosexuality is not a disease, nor is the norm so it is abnormal behavior. While it is not my choice of lifestyle, I do believe that we have no right to intrude on the private lives of consenting adults. We do have the right, however; to set boundaries upon anyone whose choices affect public morality and the common good.

I wouldn't call it a "disease", but it is certainly not normal or ever even meant to happen. Scientifically speaking, homosexuality is a psychological *defect*. The main reason of all beings to exist is to propagate themselves, which you obviously can't do with someone of the same sex.

it is not a disease... I believe that you are born with certain genes that make people that way. I heard that they r doing some studies to prove that and that they are trying to see if there is away to get rid of the gene when you are born.

Why is this in engineering?

Explain why some people are left-handed, and you will probably find a similar explanation for homosexuality.
